Round 2: Pin-Up

Likes:
While she waits for her cakes to rise or her cookies to cool, Marin likes to dabble in fashion design. She especially loves evening wear, like dresses and gowns. Unfortunately she has no idea how to sew, so the most she can do is doodle outfits in the margins of her notes.

Dislikes:
Marin is extremely frugal and hates spending money. When she eats out or goes shopping with her friends (she’ll never find a reason to go on her own), she’ll get the cheapest thing possible or even nothing at all. Culinary school already costs a lot of money, and money is expensive.

Excels at:
Being clumsy. Marin is often credited for being the first to discover how to fall up a flight of stairs.
(Strangely enough, she's incredibly graceful in the kitchen.)

Has trouble with:
Climbing stairs. Walking. Anything that involves movement, honestly.
Although, she’s pretty bad at staying still too. She fell several times while posing for this pin-up.

Favorite animal:
Marin doesn’t really have a favorite animal, but when it comes to food, goose does have quite the exquisite flavor. heh heh heh

Wow. A lot of complications came up while I was trying to finish this. This time I decided to practice my linework -- namely, adding more details. I’d really like to start integrating more detailed linework into my style. Okay, I know my style is detailed already, but it’s NOT DETAILED ENOUGH ARGHHHHH
I got a critique on better hair rendering a while back, so I also wanted to try doing more realistic hair for Marin.

So, my original plan was to design lingerie based on Marin’s sailor fuku. Those of you who have known me for a while know that I love designing outfits and I especially love lingerie, so of course I was all sorts of excited for this round. But it turns out that the pin-up round is more about a sexy version of your senshi, and less about lingerie. So I put my designs on the backburner halfway through the round...but I’m secretly hoping for a redesign round to pop up or something (if I make it that far)

And somehow I ended up getting ink splotches and stains on the paper, so with a week to go I was pretty much about to give up on the background. BUT I bought a calendar and the cardboard backing looked like a great backdrop, so I cut Marin’s pin-up out and took a white gel pen and here we are! It’s pretty close to my original concept, though if I had time I would have added more to the background. I actually love how chalk pastel goes on cardboard now, it’s so bright and vibrant. Now I want to put all my drawings on cardboard haha

And THEN I thought the deadline was tomorrow night and not tonight, so then I had to draw those feathers lightning fast! And then scanner issues...long story short, this entry has been through a lot =P

Also, I’ve resorted to the typical line-by-line format for the writeup, instead of trying to mesh it together. Somehow the judges thought I didn’t include everything last round in my write-up when I actually did, so I guess I actually have to spell it out from now on. It started out serious and then each answer got sillier and sillier, and I decided to leave it that way because I think those silly answers are exactly how Marin would respond.

I want to thank everyone who encouraged me to finish and I’m really glad I didn’t scrap this in the end! I've finally broken my streak of pulling out in the second round

Also, I am (kinda) opening commissions! Check this journal out for details: g-i-i.deviantart.com/journal/I…

Love that feather motif and how you've turned it into a design element! Her hair is just super-gorgeous, cascading rivers of color. The outline around her actually ends up having this sort of chromatic effect, kind of like the old Sailormoon holo trading cards! And then the carpet of feathers add such a great texture, so beautiful. ^^

Also, LOL at that animal answer. XDDD
